Elia is an excellent walker but his shoes are in extremely bad shape and they give away during his journey to his uncles house. The holes in his shoes make walking difficult. However, he deems it improper to appear at his uncle's house like a beggar.
On the way he puts up for the night in an inn where he steals a pair of shoes. he restarts his journey in the soft roomy but stolen shoes. However a sense of degradation overwhelms him and he finds himself unable to walk in them. He is a sensitive and honest man who never did anything wrong in his life. To worsen his feeling of guilt his feet begin to burn and throb; having a violent objection at being inside the stolen shoes. He has done something that is totally against his nature.
To make amends for his wrong, he turns back to return the shoes. In this way he loses precious time and causes his own delay in reaching his uncle's house.
